Household Hazardous Waste Depot

With the financial assistance from MMSB, the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board (NPRSB)  opened a household hazardous waste depot on June 29, 2009.  The depot which is located at the landfill site in subregion 1, will be a temporary storage facility for harzadous waste until it can be properly disposed of.  This depot is a safe, environmentally friendly and convenient way for residents to properly dispose of household hazardous waste.

This depot free of charge will be for residential service only.  No commercial waste will be accepted.   Also, annual collection will take place in Subregion 2 and 3.  Hours of operation are Monday to Friday  8:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m.

Household Hazardous Waste Tips:
-Buy only what you need and use it up. Read an follow the directions exactly.

-Use environmentally friendly alternatives.

-Never mix different products-explosive or poisonous chemical reactions may occur.

-Waste materials should not be emptied from containers and containers are not returnable.

-Before arriving at the depot, make sure all materials are in their original container or that the contents are
clearly marked on the container. Be sure all containers are capped securely.

-Emptied aerosol cans (no longer under pressure), can be brought to a metal recycler or placed in the garbage.

The Dangers of Household Hazardous Products and Waste:
-It takes mere drops of household hazardous waste (HHW) to contaminate a drinking water source, and each person generates more than seven litres each year.

-Problems arise when HHW users dispose of residuals down drains or storm sewers. HHW may corrode plumbing and cause failure in septic systems and can contaminate harbours and coastal waters.

-In a landfill ,HHW seeps into soil and water and may be transferred to humans, pets, or wildlife that consume contaminated food or water.

- When waste is burned, harmful chemicals are released into the atmosphere. These chemicals resettle or return in precipitation to both land and water.
