MMSB Launches New Backyard Composting IInitiative

This program was initiated by Multi-Material Stewardship Board (MMSB) to offer backyard compost bins at a reduced rate along with an opportunity for residents to participate in an educational training session on successful backyard composting.

Organic waste makes up as much as 30% of all the waste generated in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Composting is important, it's easy, and the end result will help your garden grow!

We all know that compost soil is great for our gardens, but there are also many environmental benefits to backyard composing.  It reduces the amount of waste sent to the landfill, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides

Partnering with MMSB provided an opportunity to purchase compost bins for just $21.00 + tax.   The remaining cost for these bins will be subsidized by MMSB.   Normally backyard compost bins retail between $50 and $70.  Also, educational training will be provided by NorPen free of charge.  This will include information to help dispel many of the myths around composting.  Our goal is to make composing as easy as possible to ensure that those who purchase the bins become committed users who actively divert 30% of their waste.

This is a promotional offer which will be available to residents within the boundaries of the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board sometime in April 2011.  Compost bins can be pre-ordered by contacting the office at 454-3110 or email nprsb@nf.aibn.com.

This is an important initiative and a great opportunity for residents to learn about backyard composting and obtain a compost bin at a reduce rate.  NorPen would like to thank MMSB for launching this new backyard composting initiative.
